1997-1998 NSF Network Operations Report
This report is one of a series of operations reports of the NSF Office of Polar Program's
UV Spectroradiometer Network. It complements Volume 7 data from the years 1997-1998.
Section 1 in an introduction and executive summary.
Section 2 provides a more detailed description of SUV-100 Spectroradiometer specifications and operational requirements, as well as a description of the auxiliary sensors and data acquisition and control software.
Section 3 describes the scan schedule and the five different types of scans and discusses calibration and data processing protocols.
Section 4 provides examples of network data for each of the sites, including noon-time UV levels in contrast to total column ozone data, and daily doses. It also discusses differences between the sites, UV irradiance trends, factors affecting UV radiation, and amplification of UV radiation correlated with ozone depletion.
Section 5 details the quality control issues at each of the six network sites. These issues include stability in the wavelength domain, responsivity stability, lamp intercomparison, and missing data. Weather and ozone observations are also discussed.
Section 6 reviews errors and inconsistencies in earlier volumes of network data that have become apparent as a result of recent enhancements in data processing techniques and quality assurance measures.
Section 7 gives thanks to the many researchers that have generously contributed to the establishment and operation of the network and the improvement of network data quality.
The Appendices include references and a more detailed discussion of CD-ROM format, database organization, full resolution data format, and code fragments for dose weightings and integrations. Ozone and weather data sources are also discussed.
