Previous UV Bulletin
UV bulletins are short reports on current UV levels at NSF network locations.
They are posted bi-weekly between September and December when
the "ozone hole" is affecting UV levels at our Austral sites.
Bulletin 4/2007, issued 11/06/07
Reporting period: 10/17/07 - 11/06/07
Synopsis:
The UV intensity at all network sites was generally below the climatological mean.
UV Indices at the three Antarctic sites remained below 6.3. Ushuaia was affected by the ozone hole on
17 October when the maximum daily UV Index was 7.5.
McMurdo Station, Antarctica:
McMurdo Station was outside the ozone hole area up to 27 October and close to the hole's perimeter thereafter.
Up to 24 October, UV intensities were at the lower limit of the range defined by measurements of the last 18 years.
After 26 October, UV levels varied about the climatological mean and the maximum daily UV Index was between 2.0 and 3.9.
UV Indices as high has 6.2 have been observed in early November historically.
Palmer Station, Antarctica:
Palmer Station was outside the ozone hole region after 22 October. UV levels were generally below the long-term average.
The maximum daily UV Index ranged between 6.3 on 18 October and 1.4 on 27 October.
The latter value was the lowest UV Index ever observed on that day; the climatological mean is 4.1. UV Indices as high as 13.6 have
been observed historically during late October and early November.
South Pole, Antarctica:
Solar elevations at the South Pole remained below 16° and UV levels were consequently still small.
Although the Station was inside the ozone hole area during the entire period,
UV levels were generally below the climatological mean, which was calculated from measurements of the last 17 years.
The UV Index gradually increased from 0.6 on 17 October to 1.7 on 5 November, which equals the long-term average for this day.
Ushuaia, Argentina:
The edge of the ozone hole passed over Ushuaia on 17 October; the station's GUV radiometer measured a total ozone column of 196 DU.
The maximum UV Index on this day was 7.5; the long-term mean is 4.1. UV levels generally stayed below the climatological
mean during the remainder of reporting period. The maximum daily UV Index varied between 2.2 and 5.3.
UV Indices as high as 10.9 have been observed in late October historically.
