Previous UV Bulletin
UV bulletins are short reports on current UV levels at NSF network locations.
They are posted bi-weekly between September and December when
the "ozone hole" is affecting UV levels at our Austral sites.
Bulletin 5/2004, issued 11/08/04
Reporting period: 10/25/04 - 11/07/04
Synopsis:
During the last week of October 2004, UV levels at all austral network sites were similar to or slightly below the long-term mean. During the first week in November, UV levels were slightly above the long-term mean but did not exhibit extreme values. Palmer Station and Ushuaia were only very little affected by the ozone hole.
McMurdo Station, Antarctica:
McMurdo Station was under the ozone hole during the entire reporting period. Between 10/25/04 and 10/31/04, UV levels compared well with the long-term mean, calculated from measurements of the last 10 years. UV levels during the first week in November were above the long-term mean but did not exhibit extreme values. The noon-time UV Index fluctuated around 3.6.
Palmer Station, Antarctica:
Palmer Station was outside the ozone hole area during almost the entire reporting period. UV levels were below the long-term mean until 11/3/04 and were close to the mean thereafter. The UV Index peaked at 5 on 11/4/04 and 11/6/04. UV Indices as high as 13 have been observed during this part of the year historically.
South Pole, Antarctica:
South Pole was under the ozone hole during the reporting period. Between 10/25/04 and 10/31/04, UV levels compared well with the long-term mean. UV levels during the first week in November were above the long-term mean but did not exhibit extreme values. The noon-time UV Index peaked at 1.7 on 11/07/04.
Ushuaia, Argentina:
Ushuaia was outside the ozone hole area during the reporting period. The noon-time UV Index ranged between 4 and 6, which is typical for this part of the year.
