REOS-3 Technical Specifications

PRR-600 Reflectance Radiometer

Optical Features: Measures 7 wavelengths of downwelling irradiance (380, 412, 443, 490, 510, 555 nm, and PAR (400-700 nm)) and upwelling radiance (380, 412, 443, 490, 510, 555, and 683 nm (natural fluorescence)).

Housing: Delrin®, measures 10 cm in diameter by 40 cm in length.

Weight: 5.4 kg (in air).

Other Sensors: Pressure/depth sensor and platinum resistance temperature transducer.

Maximum Operating Depth: 50 or 200 m, depending on pressure transducer.

Closeup of top wiper unitWiper System

Configuration: Top and bottom wiper to clean downwelling irradiance and upwelling radiance sensors on PRR-600.

Housing: Plastic with Teflon® and stainless steel wipers; measures 11 cm in diameter and 48 cm in length.

Protective Frame: Stainless steel; measures 28 cm in diameter and 48.5 cm in length.

Combined Weight: 5.6 kg in air (wiper system and protective frame).

PRR-610 Surface Radiometer

Optical Features: Measures 7 wavelengths of downwelling irradiance (380, 412, 443, 490, 510, 555 nm, and PAR).

Housing: Powder-coated aluminum; measures 10 cm in diameter by 26 cm in length and weighs 3 kg.

PRR Sensor Interface

The signals from all optical sensors are digitized and acquired with 21-bit dynamic range. RS-232 requirements are 9600 baud, N81, no handshaking.

DS-85 Data Spooler

Provides remote data spooling and power conditioning. Converts RS-485 signals from RAC to RS-232 before delivery to underwater instruments.

Housing: Plastic, waterproof; measures 11 cm in diameter by 41 cm in length.

Digital Electronic Bus (DEB-600)

Housing: Plastic; measures oxidation reduction potential (ORP), pH, temperature. Additional electrodes available in mid-2000.

Meteorological Station

  • Epply Precision Spectral Pyranometer (PSP) to measure global radiation;
  • Epply Precision Infrared Radiometer (PIR) to measure longwave radiation;
  • NovaLynx relative humidity and temperature transmitter (with solar radiation shield);
  • NovaLynx tipping bucket rain gauge; and
  • WeatherPort current loop wind station.

Remote Acquisition Controller (RAC)

Computer: Pentium®-based computer; Allen-Bradley systems available by request.

Housing: NEMA Type-4 certified enclosure.

Operating System: Microsoft Windows NT®.

Communication Software: Microsoft’s Remote Access Service (RAS) software.

Power Requirements: 120 VAC, 60/50 Hz.

Cables

RAC to Mooring: Multi-conductor, multi-jacketed Kevlar®-reinforced hydrowire for communication and power supply (maximum length 1 km).

DS-85 to Underwater Instruments: Polyurethane-jacketed submersible cables.

RAC to Met Station/PRR-610: Shielded, weather-resistant surface cable (25 meters).

Mooring

Stainless steel Unistrut® suspended from expanded foam surface floats and oriented to minimize shadows from the mooring.

Older REOS Mooring with no Wiper System

Software

Windows®-based software for system operation, data acquisition, and off-site data analysis.

Note:U.S. Patent No. 5,905,570.
